Gregg D. Webster
Gregg D. Webster - President, CEO & Chairman. Webster is a person with diabetes and a well-known advocate for finding solutions to the pandemic of diabetes through medical research, education, and new product development. Webster has attended numerous national and international diabetes scientific symposia, and has successfully attracted an impressive group of the world’s leading researchers to our company.
From January 1995 to January 1999 Webster was President & Publisher of Patients Publishing Company, Inc., an award-winning healthcare publisher, specializing in the educational management of diabetes. In the 1980’s Webster spent ten years as a business management consultant specializing in turn-around/crisis management as well as all phases of business planning.
In the previous decade, Webster worked in sales management for the scientific instrumentation divisions of Nikon, Inc. (5 years) and Carl Zeiss, GMBH (5 years).
Emmanuel C. Opara, PhD.
Emmanuel C. Opara, PhD. (Biochemistry) - Vice President of Science and Technology and is the Chairman of our Scientific Board of distinguished researchers and advisors.
Dr. Opara currently serves as a Research Professor of Biomedical Science at the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Illinois Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of London (UK) in 1975. His distinguished career path led him to the Mayo Clinic (3 years), the National Institutes of Health (2 years), and Duke University Medical School (15 years) prior to his current position.
Dr. Opara’s broad area of research interest can be summarized as diabetes, nutrition and metabolism. Opara’s research interest is antioxidant biology and disease, with a specific focus on the role played by oxygen free radicals in the pathogenesis of diabetes and digestive disorders. In addition to his work with our company, Dr. Opara’s research focus is the development of a bioartificial pancreas as a treatment/cure for Type 1 diabetes. Tremendous effort is devoted to developing cell encapsulation and cryopreservation procedures, as well as other procedures, devices, and biomaterials to enhance the clinical realization of this research objective.
James J. Balija, PhD
James J. Balija, PhD - Vice President & Secretary. Balija is the Past Executive Director of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (1995-1999) and has an extensive background in field of diabetes.
Prior to that Balija was a division director with the American Osteopathic Association (1986-1995), the American Dental Association (1984-1986), and the American Medical Association (1980-1984.)
Balija has worked with a virtual Who’s Who in diabetes research and education as well as pharmaceutical industry executives. Balija brings immediate credibility and invaluable relationships to our organization in promoting our INS2 technology.
Robert A. Horne
Robert A. Horne - Vice President, Treasurer, and President RSI/Canada, Inc. Horne is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario in Chemistry and Wilfrid Laurier University in Business Administration. Horne has a substantial background in bio-organic chemistry.
Horne’s experience includes tenure as the Director of Technical Services for a multi-national firm where he was responsible for product development and a UK joint venture. This entailed the development of medical devices for worldwide distribution to firms such as Hewlett Packard, Welch Allen, and Siemens.
Horne has 29 years of experience in mergers and acquisitions, turnarounds and start-ups in Canada and the United States, as well as experience in joint ventures involving multinational organizations.
Allan N. Fields, MD
Allan N. Fields, MD - Vice President of Public Relations. Fields is a general surgeon and a person with diabetes.
Dr. Allan N. Fields has been a practicing surgeon specializing in general and pelvic surgery since 1973. He is currently the attending physician and surgeon at Sinai Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. He is resident physician of 21st Century Radiation Centers, and attending physician for United Cerebral Palsy (Broward and Palm Beach counties). Previously, he served as Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Nova Southeastern University, Professor of Surgery at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for Humana Hospital (South Broward).
Dr. Fields was recently honored by the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians as “2004 Physician of the year.” For two decades, Fields was Chairman of the Speaker’s Bureau of Public Education for the American Cancer Society (Dade County) as well as a recipient of the National American Cancer Society physician award.
Dr. Fields is also active in sports medicine having served as team physician to the USA Olympic Team (1996), former Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the Florida State Athletic Association, Ringside Physician for the Florida Boxing Commission and Vice President of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians.
